Sandy Fun Wiki: a Wiki Sandbox for Educators
While many wikis create a single sandbox page for members to practice 'wikiwork', I've found it preferable to create a sandbox wiki where more than one teacher, librarian, or student can practice their wiki skills at a time. While this wiki has been created for ICE COLD mini-conferences it's fuller purpose is to provide a place for educators to introduce themselves to wikis and practice new found skills. If you are an educator please ask to join this wiki. Let me know, if you would, your grade level, subject area and state. Then create a wiki page, practice with various elements and have fun giving Wikispaces a try. If you know other interested teachers or librarians pass on the link to Sandy Fun Wiki. Every so often I will clean up the wiki site deleting older pages to keep the site fresh and inviting.

The flag assignment, Sample Student Lesson, is the basic lesson used for 8 years with 8th graders. It is the assignment given for students to practice creating a wiki page. Once the sandbox assignment is completed and submitted students then proceed to their class wiki to begin work on their project. The lessons provided you under Lessons by Image Methods, in the navigation column, are the step by step instructions we give verbally to the whole class before they begin the assignment. The information under Instructions and Images in the navigation column are duplicates of the pages we provide on our sandbox wiki. They provide the visual assistance after our initial instruction.

On this wiki I've created 3 different step by step lessons to give you practice in creating a simple wiki page. The difference between each lesson is the method for inserting images on your wiki. Images can be saved and uploaded to a wiki site Saved Image Method or inserted using an image URL External Image Method. A separate lesson has been devised for Internet Explorer Internet Explorer Method because a different procedure is required to get an image URL to use in the assignment. This lesson was created for the ICE COLD Spring 2013 mini-conference having learned at the fall conference that a few different instructions would assist teachers attending my session.

More wiki resources and tips are available on my wiki - L. Houle's Wiki and on Wikispaces.. You are welcome to send questions and requests for help through the Wikispaces messaging system. Locate wjhmedia under members and click on my username then send your message. To join Wikispaces, you don't have to create a wiki to join, visit Wikispaces for Teachers

Thanks goes to Erica Roberts for her original sandbox lesson on which this site is built. It was due to Erica and my D201 colleague Colleen Walsh that I was introduced to the marvelous world of wikis
